Today I am going to talk about the zeiss Batis 40mm f2 CF or close focus lens.
In my opinion the 40mm is more versatile than almost any other lens. It is such a uncommon focal length and you are more likely going to find a 50mm or 35mm being used. But the 40mm it to me is quintessential. I mean entire movies have been shot on the 40 mm focal length, like Chinatown (40mm) Royal Tennenbaums (40mm) Rushmore (40mm) The Godfather (40mm) 1917 where Sam mendes and roger dekens shot on the arri mini LF with the 35-47mm focal lengths through out the whole movie. This range is very real feeling in my eyes. I prefer to shoot tighter compared to wide. I mean yes you need establishing shots and maybe some very wide angle for Interior shots and I know that having a wide angle can get you out of some tight spots no pun intended. But I still use the 40mm for wide shots like this one… and if you want to get tighter with a single lens you also have the ability in post or in a Sony body to crop in a bit. Like the a7iii or r series cameras having a super35 mode and clear image zoom in the a7s series bodies. With that 40 at 1.5 crop becoming a 60mm lens. Even running the full active stabilization of the a7siii which puts a 1.2 crop on the lens at a 48mm. I love all three of these focal lengths. Then we have the close focus features which is like macro but not really macro. I mean you can get close and I mean close to something and still have a great focus. Again very versatile. I use this all the time on product shoots and things I really want to capture detail on. Just nice to have in your bag for sure.
In conclusion I see myself getting the set of zeiss Batis lenses in the future as they are priced pretty well for what they are. Have great contrast and are color matched for post work flow. What more do you want in a lens set. Maybe let me know down below what you think and I would be happy to respond! Thanks for watching and don’t stop creating! Peace!
