On New Year’s Eve day I went to a local Shinto shrine and Buddhist temple in Tokyo’s Todoroki neighborhood.

The Tamagawa-jinja Shinto Shrine was built in 1890 and pays homage to three deities (Kami): Izanagi Mikoto, Izanami Mikoto, and Amaterasu Okami.

The Manganji Buddhist Temple belongs to the Shingon tradition and is said to have been founded at the end of the Heian period in the 12 century. Now it is renovated and it has a more modern feeling to it. The main object of veneration is the Kongokai Dainichi Nyorai (Mahavairocana Mandala). In this video you can also see the beautiful statue of Hitokotojizo. [EN] [JP]
