After a crazy 2020 it’s finally happening! I’m moving to Tokyo, Japan to teach English at a private high school as part of the JET Programme. This is program, run by the Japanese government, invites foreigners from around the world to promote cultural exchange and foreign language skills in Japanese schools. After a tough selection process, I was accepted into the programme in March as a cultural ambassador of Australia and was due to leave in August. However, due to COVID-19 and the chaos it caused around the world, this was delayed indefinitely. Now thanks to both Australia and Japan keeping the pandemic relatively under control, we were told that we’ll be departing on the 26th of November 2020!

Although I have some teaching experience, I have never taught English before so this is all going to be very new to me. Combined with having to adapt to living a new country while barely speaking their language, I am definitely a little nervous. It’s a huge departure from the life I have become so used in Sydney, Australia, where I had my friends and a well-paying job. I honestly don’t know how this will turn out, especially with COVID-19 still an issue in Tokyo, so join me along this journey and find out!

But one thing is for sure – I will have to start budgeting! English teachers don’t get paid a tonne of money and Tokyo is a very expensive city, so I’ll be sharing all my experiences on how to live, eat and travel in Japan on a budget!
