We took a scenic helicopter flight in Aso-Kuju National Park (阿蘇くじゅう国立公園.) Mt. Aso’s caldera is one of the world’s largest, and stretches 18KM from East to West and 25KM from North to South. There are five mountains within the Mt. Aso caldera, including Mt. Nakadake (阿蘇中岳火口), whose crater is still very active. The volcanic activity of the huge crater was very high the day we saw it, and was emitting massive amounts of white smoke, making it difficult to see the crater itself. Still, the overall experience of flying over the entire Mt. Aso area is one not to be missed.
