01. Fushimi Inari Shrine
The head shrine of Inari, located in Fushimi-ku. The earliest structures were built in 711. The main shrine structure was built in 1499. Unlike most Shinto shrines, Fushimi Inari Taisha has an open view of the main idol object (a mirror).

02. Arashiyama
A district on the western outskirts of Kyoto. Also refers to the mountain across the Oi River. Is a nationally-designated Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty. Includes Iwatayama Monkey Park, Tenryu-ji, Matsunoo-taisha, Okochi Sanso.

03. Eikan-do Zenrin-ji
The head temple for the Seizan branch of Japan’s Jodo-shu (Pure Land) Buddhist sect. Was founded by Shinsho, a pupil of Kukai, and is famous for its fall foliage and for its prominence in the past as a center of learning.

04. Philosopher’s Walk
A pedestrian path that follows a cherry-tree-lined canal. Passes a number of temples and shrines. Takes about 30 minutes to complete the walk. On the northern part of the walk, there are good views of the nearby Daimonji.

05. Shugakuin Imperial Villa
A set of gardens and outbuildings (mostly tea-houses) in the hills of the eastern suburbs. One of Japan’s most important large-scale cultural treasures. One of the great masterpieces of Japanese gardening. Accepts visitors by appointment.

06. Kiyomizu-dera
An independent Buddhist temple. Was founded in the early Heian period, in 798. Its present buildings were constructed in 1633, ordered by the Tokugawa Iemitsu. There is not a single nail used in the entire structure.

07. Maruyama Park
A park. Noted as the main center for cherry blossom viewing. Star attraction is a weeping cherry tree (shidarezakura) which becomes lit up at night. The main entrance to the park is through Yasaka Shrine. Is a nationally-designated Place of Scenic Beauty.

08. Kyoto Tower
An observation tower. The tallest structure in Kyoto. The observation deck at 100 metres (328 ft) and its spire at 131 metres (430 ft). he 800-ton tower stands atop a 9-story building, which houses a 3-star hotel and several stores. Construction began in 1963. Was completed near the end of 1964.

09. Shisen-do
A Buddhist temple of the Soto Zen sect. A room in the main temple displays portraits of thirty-six Chinese poets. The selection of the poets was based on the opinion of Hayashi Razan. The portraits were executed by Kano Tan’yu.

10. Nijo Castle
A flatland castle. Consists of two concentric rings (Kuruwa) of fortifications, the Ninomaru Palace, the ruins of the Honmaru Palace, various support buildings and several gardens.
