Ginza
Built on the site of a mint dating back to the Edo era (1603-1867), Ginza is an area steeped in history with an air of self-assured elegance. Its main street houses some of Tokyo’s original department stores, and many still flock here for peerless service that matches the high-class products on offer. Ginza’s backstreets are adventures in boutique shopping and tiny yet exquisite bistros. Rather than resting on its reputation, however, Ginza constantly evolves with the times, providing cultured modernity, energy and old-Tokyo charm.
Aoyama & Omotesando
Flanked on three sides by Tokyo’s premier hubs of neon and nightlife—Shibuya, Shinjuku and Roppongi—the streets of Aoyama and Omotesando are cut from slightly more elegant cloth. This is an upper-class area of boutique shopping and sophisticated dining. Flagship stores of major fashion brands rub shoulders on the tree-lined boulevard of Omotesando—Tokyo’s answer to the Champs Élysées—and the backstreets of Aoyama are home to small boutiques and highly acclaimed dining spots. The area offers quiet open spaces of seasonal color such as Meiji Jingu Gaien and Aoyama Cemetery, as well as a host of architectural and artistic highlights.
Yoyogi Park
Conveniently located next to the famed Meiji Jingu shrine, Yoyogi Park serves local Tokyoites with sprawling lawns and ample sports facilities. Compared to other parks that focus on things like flower variety or traditional design aesthetics, Yoyogi Park’s charm comes from its straightforward functionality and the eclectic mix of characters it attracts.
The practical appeal of the grounds makes the park a gathering place for people from all walks of life. Various groups such as punk rockers, martial arts club members, and cosplayers make the park a frequent gathering place, while amateur athletes take advantage of the soccer field, hockey field, and cycling course within the grounds. Everyone is welcome.
Shimokitazawa
Shimokitazawa is only a stone’s throw from Shibuya and Shinjuku, but the intensity of the city drops a few degrees when you pull into the station. This laid-back bohemian district is home to vintage clothing stores, select bookstores, music shops and funky, distinctive cafés and bars. Shimokitazawa doesn’t really kick into gear until lunchtime, so schedule an afternoon of select shopping followed by an evening in one of the cozy bars and cafes.
