Skardu is located in Gilgit Baltistan. The Gilgit Baltistan is a territory in Pakistan administered Kashmir. Now it is being the declare of the fifth province of Pakistan. Skardu city is located in the 6 kilometers wide by 23 kilometers long Skardu Valley, at the confluence of the Indus and Shigar Rivers at an elevation of nearly 2,500 meters. Skardu means low land between two high places. I am coming back from Katpana cold desert. Now I will visit Kharphocho Fort and Manthal Budha Rock. The population of the Skardu district is about 215000 People. It is about 150 Km from Kargil and 600 Km from Islamabad. The Kharphocho fort was built in the 8th century during the Maqpon dynasty rulers of Baltistan. It was a seven-story building. Mostly local people say that Kharpoocho is made by a ghost as they were servants of the ruler of that time. Kharphocho fort was built on a design similar to that of Leh Palace and the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Kharphocho means the great fort. It is also called Skardu Fort. Unfortunately, It is not open for tourists, and I can’t enter through this hole. When I came down then I met with a person who has keys but I was tired so I will visit it again next time. Now I am going to Deosai National Park. you can watch it in my next video. It is Manthal Buddha Rock a large granite rock on which a picture of Buddha has engraved. It probably dates back to the 8 century. Before the arrival of Islam in the region of Gilgit-Baltistan, the majority of the people were Buddhist and they had engraved the Buddha on many rock pieces. This Buddha carving was not known to the world until the beginning of the 20th century due to its remote location. In 1906 the Scottish traveler Ella Christie wrote a book on her journey to Western Tibet and featured the carving in her book which gave it international attention.
