巌立（がんだて）は、御嶽山（おんたけさん）の噴火活動で形成された絶壁で、約5万4千年前に形成された日本一の規模を誇る溶岩流の断面です。岐阜県下呂市小坂町の濁河川と椹谷の合流点に位置し、付近一帯は「巌立峡」と呼ばれています。周辺は「がんだて公園」として整備されており、巌立展望台や駐車場・トイレがあります。また200以上の滝がある「小坂の滝めぐり」の散策拠点の一つになっており、遊歩道で滝めぐりトレッキングも楽しめます。
「日本百名山」の一つである御嶽山の大噴火によって流出した溶岩が冷えてできた高さ72ｍ、幅120ｍの柱状節理の大岩壁は、県指定の「天然記念物」となっており、紅葉時期には岩壁の上の木々が色彩豊かに色づき、柱状節理の岩壁との対比が素晴らしいです。例年の紅葉の見頃は10月中旬～下旬です。
根尾の滝（ねおのたき）は、巌立峡の奥地にある落差63ｍ、幅約5ｍの滝で「日本の滝100選」に選定されています。
巌立峡から林道を進み、根尾の滝駐車場から徒歩で片道約1時間程のコースとなっており、現在はガイド同伴のツアーでのみ行けますが、アップダウンは予想以上にありますので、体力に自信のある方向けのコースです。
新緑や紅葉期の滝と周囲の森の景観は一見の価値があり、例年の紅葉の見頃は10月中旬～下旬です。
巌立峡へのアクセスは、下呂市と高山市を結ぶ国道41号を「飛騨小坂駅」付近から県道437号へ入り、看板に従ってしばらく東へ進むと「がんだて公園駐車場」があります。さらに奥地へ林道を進むと「根尾の滝駐車場」があり、そこから滝まで登山道を歩いて約1時間ですが、滝に至る遊歩道は2018年6月28日豪雨で被災し、現在は小坂の滝めぐりガイドツアーでのみ遊歩道の通行を許可されています。
Gandate is a cliff formed by the eruptive activity of Mount Ontake and is a cross-section of the largest lava flow in Japan, which was formed approximately 54,000 years ago. It is located at the confluence of the Nigorigo River and Sawaradani in Kosaka-cho, Gero City, Gifu Prefecture, and the entire area around it is known as the Gandate Canyon.
The surrounding area has been developed as Gandate Park with a Gandate observatory, a parking lot and toilets. It is also a walking base for the “Waterfalls of Kosaka,” with more than 200 waterfalls, and you can enjoy trekking around the waterfalls along the walking trail.
The 72-meter high, 120-meter wide columnar jointed rock wall, which was formed when lava from the eruption of Mount Ontake cooled down, has been designated as a prefectural “natural monument”. The best time to admire the autumn colors is from mid to late October.
Neonotaki is a waterfall with a drop of 63 meters and a width of about 5 meters, located deep in the Gandate Canyon, and has been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan.
It takes about one hour on foot from the parking lot of Neotaki Falls from Gandate Canyon along the forest road.
The view of the waterfall and the surrounding forest during the fresh green and autumn color season is well worth seeing, and the best time to see the autumn leaves is mid to late October.
