Mt Hood was one of my favorite spots to photograph, hike, or just visit, during the 6 years I lived in Portland. And yet, I never spent a night there –I guess that being a short drive away from my bed didn’t help. I wanted to finally change that. My idea was to hike around the mountain following the Timberline trail over 4 days and 3 nights, but the trail was in pretty bad shape, filled with downed trees from a recent windstorm. Forecast had snow approaching quickly as well. I was only able to do a section of it, and to spend just one night, but what a night. Temperature was perfect, no wind, clear skies, stunning view of Mt Hood from Gnarl Ridge, relaxing noise of nearby Newton Creek to fall sleep to.
