Today we are going to a Meerkat café!

They love me! If Khaleesi is mother of dragons then I am mother of meerkats!

The meerkat cafe is actually part of the Harry hedgehog café, each store has hedgehogs plus a different furry animal. The one in Yokohama has Meerkats, it is just 45 minutes from Tokyo and located near the entrance of the Yokohama Chinatown.

The hedgehog café is located on the second floor, let’s go! The stairs are lined with super cute terracotta hedgehogs and plant decoration.

Early seasons greetings at the door. There’s a beautiful floor mosaic and a delightful hedgehog silhouette entrance.
To play with the Meerkats you have to enter through a double gate to ensure the Meertkats are safe and don’t run off. They are very friendly, playful and extremely lively. They will come to you and are not afraid of humans at all!

It was super fun and one of them tried to eat my scarf! Another one got stuck half way down my shirt and was unwilling to let go! It was hilarious!
Meerkats belong to the small mongoose family and are found in southern Africa. They are characterised by a broad head and a thin tail. The head-and-body length is around 30cm, and they weigh just under 1 kg.

One of the popular things about Japan is the weird and wonderful cafes in the city. The first Harry café was opened in 2016 and now have several stores across the country. I’m in Yokohama for work this week, and being able to visit this café during the weekend is really is a treat for me.

The Japanese word for hedgehog is Harinezumi, which is literally “needle mouse”, so the store name Harry Hedgehog is a play on that Japanese word. They are the first hedgehog café in the world with the first shop in Roppongi, Tokyo.
Upon entering the café you are required to disinfect your hands and also wear gloves if you are going to touch the hedgehogs.
Considering this is a Sunday afternoon, the shop quite empty compared the one in Tokyo. There just us and maybe 1-2 other visitors.

The hedgehogs that live here are African Pygmy hedgehogs or the 4 toed hedgehogs. They’re so adorable and didn’t bite at all, they also have albino ones here! The staff there told me that the hedgehogs take breaks from meeting people, so what we see here are only some of them, while other ones are in another room taking a rest and chilling.

Every Harry store has different little furry friends, there are Meerkats in the Yokohama store and in the Tokyo Roppongi store they have a fennec fox, The Harajuku store has an otter. You don’t have make a booking if you visit, especially the one in Yokohama, but if you are planning on going to the Roppongi store, you will need to book online because it is very crowded there. The process is very easy with the on screen instructions at their website.

Have you ever played with Meerkats? It was a first time me and a super fun experience! Thanks for coming along with me today, remember to subscribe if you want to see more videos about Japan, I’ll see you in the next one! Bye!
