Dejima was an artificial, fan-shaped island measuring less than 1.5 hectares in the port of Nagasaki. This island was a Dutch trading post from 1641 to 1859 and the only contact between the Western world and the largely closed-off Japan. The Dutch also traded with Thailand, Indonesia, India and Africa. The VOC was thus the first internationally operating institution. An international payment method was also introduced with the VOC currency. The Dutch have brought so much to Japan, goods such as sugar and silk, but also science. After the trade treaty of 1859, the Netherlands lost this position. In 1922 Dejima was recognized as a historical heritage and restored.
Fortunately we were able to view a lot inside, because it was raining cats and dogs. After lunch it continued to rain. Then also here to the atomic bomb museum. Three days after the first atomic bomb in Hiroshima, the second and hopefully last atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. This museum and its memorials were completely different, but equally impressive.
