シチメンソウ群生地（しちめんそうぐんせいち）は、佐賀県南部の有明海に面した東与賀海岸（ひがしよかかいがん）に自生する希少種のシチメンソウの群生地で、晩秋の有明海の干潟を真っ赤に染め上げる景観が見事で、現地では「海の紅葉」と呼ばれ風物詩となっており、「日本の紅葉百選」にも選定されています。
シチメンソウは西日本の干潟に群生する塩生植物の1年草で、茎は高さ20～40cm程度、生長の過程で色の変化がみられ、夏の緑色から秋には全株が鮮やかな紅紫色となり、海岸や河口付近を彩ります。シチメンソウは満潮時に海水に浸るような環境で生育し、干潮時に歩ける場所も、実は満潮時には海水が入ってきます。
有明海に面した佐賀県南部の海岸は貴重な群生地ですが、2018年～19年にかけて原因不明の立ち枯れが発生し、群生地はほぼ全滅といっていい状況となりました･･･
野鳥やムツゴロウなどが生息する有明海の干潟。シチメンソウは絶滅が危惧されている希少種でもあり、現在はボランティアなどの協力によって再生が試みられ、2020年は順調に生育して「海の紅葉」が復活しました！
シチメンソウの紅葉の見頃は10月下旬～11月上旬、コロナ禍で「シチメンソウまつり」は中止されましたが、見事に蘇った「海の紅葉」をぜひ見にいってください！
なお、例年11月上旬に「干潟よか公園」を中心に「シチメンソウまつり」も開かれています。
シチメンソウ群生地へのアクセスは、佐賀県南部を通る国道414号から県道313へ入り「八田江川」の河口付近にある「干潟よか公園駐車場」を利用します。公園には芝生広場や遊具があるほか、海岸部の堤防を登るとシチメンソウの群生地が一望できます。干潮時にはシチメンソウ群生地のすぐそばを歩けます。
A rare species of the Shichimenso (Suaeda japonica) grows wildly along the Higashi-Yoka coast facing the Ariake Sea in southern Saga Prefecture, and the scene of the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea in late autumn, which are dyed red, is so beautiful that it is called “Autumn Leaves of the Sea” and has been selected as one of the “100 Best Autumn Leaves in Japan”.
Its stems are 20 to 40 centimeters tall and change color as they grow, turning from green in summer to a bright red-purple color in fall. The plant grows in an environment where it is submerged in seawater at high tide, so places where it can walk at low tide are actually exposed to seawater at high tide.
The coastline of southern Saga Prefecture facing the Ariake Sea is a valuable habitat, but from 2018 to 2019, unexplained die-offs occurred and the habitat was almost completely destroyed…
The tidal flats of the Ariake Sea are home to wild birds and mudflats. The Shichimenso is a rare species that is threatened with extinction, and with the help of volunteers and others, attempts are currently being made to regenerate it, and by 2020 it will be growing well and the “Autumn Leaves of the Sea” will be back!
