I decided to capture the breathtaking silence of the Fushimi Inari shrine. As it is usually filled with visitors, the tranquility of the empty shrine is almost an impossible experience for tourists to behold.
Fushimi Inari shrine is one of the biggest shrines in Japan that has more than 30,000 sub shrines across the country.
Inari shrines belong to Shintō (“the way of the gods”). It is the indigenous faith of the Japanese people and as old as Japan itself. It reminds Japan’s major religion alongside Buddhism.
Legends say that, farmers in this area were hopelessly suffering from drought, not knowing what to do. However, one day, foxes came down from Mt. Inari (that’s where Fushimi Inari shrine is located) and began hunting the mice that had been eating people’s crops. The foxes eventually returned to the mountain and soon after they left, the farmers were blessed with rain. The farmers believed that the foxes told the gods on Mt. Inari of their situation. Because of this miracle, the people of Shintō began to worship foxes as they were considered messengers of gods. With this reason, fox statutes are seen throughout the Fushimi Inari shrine.

これから先、二度と見ることは出来ないと思われる静寂に包まれた京都の伏見稲荷大社を一ヶ月かけて少しづつ撮影し、限られた機材で可能な限り神社の神秘的な世界を表現出来る様に頑張りました。
伏見稲荷大社は、日本全国に3万社以上あると言われている、稲荷神社の総本宮です。
伏見稲荷大社に数えきれない程の、狐の石像がある理由は、過去にこの地域では日照りが長く続き農作物が実らず、人々が飢えに苦しんでいたそうです。しかしある時、狐達が稲荷山から村に降りてきて、数少ない農作物を荒らす鼠を狩り始め、人間の限りある食べ物を守ったらしいのです。しばらくして狐達は稲荷山へ帰っていったのですが、驚くことに狐達が山へ帰って間もなく雨が降り始め、農作物は再び育ち始め、人々の命は救われたとの事です。
この奇跡的な出来事から、狐は稲荷山に住む神様、稲荷大神に村人達の苦境を伝え、後に彼等は救われたのだと信じられるようになり、神道では、狐は神様の使いとして信仰の対象となり、狐の石像が作られるようになっていった
って近所のおばあちゃんが言ってました。
