In today’s Japan Walking Tour series, join me for a walk at the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter in Okayama!

Kurashiki (倉 敷) is located in Okayama Prefecture, not far from the capital Okayama.

Kurashiki has a preserved canal area dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867), when the city served as an important rice distribution center. In fact, the name “Kurashiki” can roughly translate as “the town of warehouses” for rice warehouses.

Many of Kurashiki’s former warehouses have been converted into museums, shops and cafes. Ohara Museum is the most impressive of the Kurashiki museums, displaying a large collection of works by famous Western artists.

This canal is a 10-minute walk from Kurashiki Station. You can enjoy a peaceful walk and feel like you are in the history of Japan.

The video starts at Kurashiki Station, walking along the main traffic route to the historic neighborhood. The restaurants and souvenir shops here have almost closed, but many tourists still visit.
