An ancient castle wall looms atop a mountain amid the early morning fog from a nearby river, cutting a striking profile, like a warship on a sea of clouds.

It’s a site that a growing number of people are coming to see, trekking up the road to Takeda Castle for an hour after a three-hour local-train journey from the western Japanese city of Osaka, or driving for a a few hours to get there.

The site has been dubbed, “Japan’s Machu Picchu” after the majestic Inca mountain city in Peru.

Built in the 15th and 16th centuries and abandoned around 1600, Takeda Castle is located in Hyogo Prefecture, perched atop a mountain at a height of 354 meters above sea level. Perhaps most amazingly, as can be seen in this live video feed during daytime hours, the main castle wall is nearly undamaged from its original state when it was built hundreds of years ago.
