some important tips you need to know before planning your trip to this stunning area of Japan! you can get to MURODO (highest point on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route) from Nagano/Matsumoto or from Toyama. From TOKYO you can take the Shinkansen Bullet Train or a very affordable overnight Highway bus to either of these. many people do the entire course starting in one prefecture going over the mountaintop and descending in the other. depending on what season you are going there if you go through the autumn with the beautiful foliage colors I would recommend you to go from Nagano/Matsumoto. Actually there are WILLER buses from Tokyo directly to Shinano Omachi!! if you go in April May for the iconic snow wall, you need to come from Toyama area. you will have to change transport many times and line up for tickets so it is better to buy a full ticket that encompasses your desired route so that you don’t have to line up every time. even in the coronavirus time it was quite crowded because this area is so famous in Japan and you will have to line up and everything will be much more delayed than you initially planned so you need to hurry and be the first and keep the speed up when you are doing this public transports. At MURODO the highest point of this route there is the stunning lake Mikurigaike and very easy to walk trails to see the surrounding landscape that resembles Switzerland and then you can also take a bath at the hot springs (Mikurigaike Onsen or Raichoso) even if you don’t stay at their hotel and you can buy food at their Mikurigaike Onsen restaurant and it is extremely delicious!! there is also a campsite Raichosawa, if you are on a budget!! this area is stunning in every season and I very much hope we can come here again to observe the Autumn foliage after mid of October.
