Travel off the beaten path in Japan to Sendai 仙台 where the powerful daimyo Date Masamune ruled.
Sendai was founded in 1600 and is the largest city in the northern Tohoku region of Japan. The tsunami of 2011 devastated the area but the city has since rebuilt and stronger than before. The city is famous for having a strong tradition of being home to some of Japan’s best craftsmen.
Must do in Sendai:
• Zuihoden Mausoleum where Date Masamune and his family are buried ⛩
• Aoba castle ruin overlooking the entire city 🏯
• Eat Gyutan (beef tongue) bbq which is Sendai’s delicacy 🍖
• Visit during Tanabata Festival (July 7) to see the world famous Sendai Tanabata Matsuri 🎊
