Travel with me down to Hirokawa Beach in Wakayama, Japan for a cool photography experiment. Here’s the plan: Hike from the train station to a small pond I saw on Google Maps. Point my camera at the mountain ridge beyond the pond where there are several wind turbines (like windmills, but modern). After nightfall, take a series of exposures and see what the star trails look like behind the spinning blades.
This photo excursion in rural Japan was a lot of fun. The clouds and bright moon, unfortunately, spoiled the effect of the star trails somewhat. But as you see in the video, the entire evening was great fun. It’s always worth trying — the adventure lies in the attempt. Plus, I saw a great surprise sunset, met some frogs, listened to gunshots all night long (don’t ask), and got that sense of satisfaction you get when you make a travel plan and then put in the effort to actually do it.
