I’ve always been slightly ambivalent about public libraries being located in shopping centres in Singapore. But it seems like an unstoppable trend, with the recent closure of the library in Bukit Merah Central (depriving many local residents of a beloved space) and relocating it to… Vivocity. I’m very happy to know that the Queenstown Library is now a building that is officially conserved by the URA, which means that a small part of my memories of obscure libraries will be preserved. Meanwhile, I’m trying to go with the flow and ride the wave; accept the fact that all public libraries are destined to be found within shopping malls now. It’s not all bad, all things considering. It’s also kind of subversive in a way, that these temples of knowledge are inserted (hopefully not engulfed) by these pyramids of capitalism. Sigh. Singapore. What shall we do with you? What can we do with you?
