We didn’t reach our hotel until late in the afternoon. We just had time to visit Hiroshima Castle. This castle from the 14th century was razed to the ground with “the bomb” from 1945. In the 50’s they rebuilt a section for tourism. On the ground of the castle is another tree that survived the bomb.
Hiroshimo’s specialty is Okonomi-Yaki. This is a savory pancake with a lot in it. As far as I’m concerned, this was the best meal so far. See how this is made at
The Peace Park contains the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and a number of monuments. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum gives a very penetrating account of the consequences of the nuclear bomb that exploded over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 at 8.15 am. The monuments are in memory of the victims. There are also separate monuments for killed residents, students, prisoners of war and guest workers. Most special is that of the girl who initially survived the bomb, but contracted leukemia due to the radiation (Children’s Peace Monument). She wanted to fold 1,000 cranes before her death. She didn’t make it. She was given a monument and after that thousands of cranes were added to the victims in memory. Cranes are added daily by children.
Just outside the Peace Park is the Atomic-bomb Dome. This is a ruin of a government building that was still partly standing after the bomb. Furthermore, there was almost only rubble. This Dome is preserved as a monument by Unesco.
The Mitaki temple is also called the hidden temple. The temple is therefore hidden in a gorge in a beautiful forest. From the JR station we walked there in 20 minutes. There a very nice walk started up between a pagoda, a few small temples and a lot of statues. The whole resembled a beautifully landscaped rock garden. It was really beautiful. The main temple was located at the end of the cobbled path. We expected a bigger temple there. We had walked even farther to find a larger temple. The main temple turned out to be no bigger than the small temples we had already encountered on the way.
