Kidnapping? Hijacking? Pakistan. Escape from terror. Caught by the police. Islamic terrorism. Bicycle touring. ISIS? Bicycle touring. Pakistan travel.
“I waited for you here” are the first words of the escort assigned to me just after crossing the border between Iran and Pakistan, and afterward “You are brave, courageous” causes rather a horror and “Poland, what a continent?” gives the certainty that I entered a country that spins in another galaxy. I had the escort hundreds of miles through desert areas, sleeping in police stations with no permission to leave them cause of the proximity of the poorly guarded border with Afghanistan and kidnappings by Pakistani citizens even. The escorts with Kalashniks comb the beards and give me some sudden braking on the sand dunes that covered the road. The policeman pours a thousand sheets out of his pocket and when he writes down my data on a random one, I suspect he can use modern algorithms ‘cloud’ to search for information.
Kidnapping? Hijacking? Bicycle touring…..
I sleep at the police stations and get almost nothing to eat except dried dates and pistachios, additionally can’t go to the city alone. I manage to persuade the policeman to come with me because bread is just around the corner. When I leave, the inhabitants of the clay houses look at me like I would be an alien. The fear. I changed my escort today 8 times and at the end of the day, to get through Quetta city I got an armored car (last photo).

The Pakistan area is not only the scene of the known conflict with Taliban units and Pashtun separatists. It is also an area of separatist activities in its less known province – Balochistan. The main actors in this conflict are the Baloch people living in the area and the federal government of Pakistan. It is not difficult not to notice the internal conflict between the Baloch themselves, and more precisely, between the traditional leaders, the sardars, and representatives of various national liberation groups. As a result of border disputes and different policies towards border residents, this conflict also affected relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Baloch is a community with strong tribal ties. Characteristic for it is the existence of inter-tribal rivalry, the associated formation of unstable alliances, and the strong, intra-tribal power of the sardars. Originally, the Kalatu Khan was the person who brought the diverse tribes together politically. The first state structure to influence most of the Baloch tribes was created by Nasir Khan, who ruled Kalat from 1749.
Balochistan’s territory is predominantly desert and sparsely populated. Consequently, much of the area is not sufficiently under the control of Pakistan’s central administration and is poorly controlled by the federal army. Combined with tribalism, this creates a favorable area for the development of guerrilla movements, in the fight against which the federal army is still not very successful.
To understand the complex socio-political structure and significant historical events that have influenced current attitudes among Baloch, the evolution of the conflict will be traced from the unsuccessful attempts to fully subjugate the Baloch area by the British Empire to the present day.
