Japan Trip: Hot Spring Oasis after Trekking Mount Tokachidake, Tokachidake Onsen　Hokkaido12 Moopon

On the slopes of Mount Tokachidake, an active volcano in Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido, at an elevation of 1280 meters above sea level, is Tokachidake Onsen (十勝岳温泉). This onsen is a collection of four hot spring ryokan (hot spring inn). The onsen (hot spring bath) is also the starting point for many of the hiking trails into the national park.

The simple Ryounkaku, at the end of the mountain road, allow visitors not spending the night at the ryokan (inn) to use their onsen (hot spring bath) for a nominal fee. Ryounkaku’s bath is gender separated. The outdoor bath has brownish water with wonderful views onto the Tokachidake Mountains. Though the view is beautiful all year round, many visitors opt to bathe here in late September and early October when the autumn colors glorifies the mountain. Also, the view in the winter months is spectacular as well.

From the parking lot at the end of the road, visitors will find the trailhead for hiking excursions into the national park. It takes about an hour to arrive at the Ansei Crater, a volcanically active valley. Visitors can explore the valley, though it is advised to proceed with caution. The ascent to the peak of Tokachidake will take about four hours (one way). From the peak, hikers with the proper equipment can continue trekking into the national park, though this will take a few days.

Access Information
By Bus:
Between JR Kamifurano Station and Tokachidake Onsen, there are 3 roundtrips by bus daily. The one-way journey is about 45 minutes with a cost of 500 yen.
By Car:
From central Furano to Tokachidake Onsen, the one way journey should take about 1 hour.
