Women prayed, Friday, in honor of Chao Mae Tubtim, known to be the good spirit of fertility, at Lingam Fertility Shrine, located in Downtown Bangkok. Praying at the shrine is said to increase fertility and a woman’s chances at conception.
Women that have conceived or have already given birth, revisit the shrine and present gifts goddess, such as phallus shaped sculptures made from wood, stone or rubber. The exact year of the shrines founding is unknown, but is thought to be around 100 years old after a woman, desperate to conceive, consulted Chao Mae Tubtim and gave birth to a healthy child 9 months after her visit.
Due to its lack of popularity among tourists, the shrine maintains its intended calm and spiritual atmosphere, as people pray, light incense and offer gifts.
