人吉城（ひとよしじょう）は、熊本県南部の人吉市の中心部にあった城郭跡で、国の「史跡」に指定され、「日本百名城」の一つに数えられます。
「日本三大急流」で知られる球磨川の南側に位置し、石垣の上からは人吉市街と共に球磨川を見下ろせます。

人吉城の歴史は古く、鎌倉時代初頭までさかのぼり、1205年に相良氏がこの地の地頭に任じられた頃から、すでに城郭としての機能を果たしていたといいます。
その後も室町・戦国・江戸時代を通じて相良氏が治め、人吉城も近世城郭として拡張・整備されました。
明治の西南戦争で、多くの建造物が焼失しましたが、現在は公園として整備され、遺構の復元も進みます。

城郭は球磨川とその支流胸川の合流点に築かれており、北側と西側は、球磨川と胸川を天然の堀とし、東側と南側は山の斜面と崖を天然の城壁として、巧みに自然を利用した堅固な城郭でした。

「日本三大急流」の球磨川は熊本県最大の河川で、長大な流域の所々に桜並木も見られます。
また「球磨川ライン下り」も名物となっています。土日には「SL人吉」から車窓のお花見も楽しめます。
球磨川源流部の「市房ダム」も桜の名所として有名で、球磨川に沿って桜名所を巡るのもオススメです

Hitoyoshi Castle is one of the 100 Great Castles in Japan and is located in the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture.
It is located on the south side of Kuma River, which is known as one of the “three great rapids” in Japan, and from the top of the stonewall you can look down on the Kuma River as well as the city of Hitoyoshi.

The history of Hitoyoshi Castle dates back to the beginning of the Kamakura period (1185-1333), when the Sagara clan was appointed as the head of the land, and it was already functioning as a castle.
The Sagara clan ruled over the area during the Muromachi, Sengoku and Edo periods, and Hitoyoshi Castle was expanded and improved as a castle in the modern era.
Although many of the buildings were destroyed by fire during the Seinan War of the Meiji era, the castle has now been transformed into a park, and the restoration of the remains is underway.

The fortress was built at the confluence of Kuma River and its tributary Munegawa River. The north and west sides of the fortress had a natural moat between Kuma River and Munegawa River, and the east and south sides of the fortress had mountain slopes and cliffs as natural walls.

The Kuma River, one of the “three largest rapids in Japan,” is the largest river in Kumamoto Prefecture, and there are many cherry blossom trees along its long watershed.
The “Kuma River Line Cruise” is also a popular feature of the river. On Saturdays and Sundays, you can enjoy viewing the cherry blossoms from the window of the SL Hitoyoshi train.
The Ichifusa Dam at the headwaters of the Kuma River is also famous for its cherry blossoms, and it is recommended to tour the cherry blossom viewing spots along the Kuma River.
