In today’s video, I set off on my journey and start driving north through Gunma. I only make it about an hour north of Maebashi before drive past a little town called Yujuku Onsen, in Minakami. I turned around and parked the car at the entrance of the Yujuku Onsen walking course. As I’m parking the car, this grandmother and her granddaughter who were sitting outside run and hide inside their house. I found out later the child ran inside and told her granddad, “there’s a foreigner here!” The granddad met me outside and asked if I spoke Japanese and told me to sit down for a little chit chat. After we talked for a while, he showed me around in his local onsen(hot spring) town. Unfortunately, because of corona right now though, no outsiders are allowed to bathe in the onsen. After the little tour, I went to eat lunch at Yamaichi. Along the way, I get lost and come across a tea shop where the owner points me in the right direction and also gives me a $1 off coupon to use at the restaurant. After a tasty lunch, I go back to the tea shop to repay the favor and drink a cup of coffee. The man and I watch some high school baseball on TV and chat for a little bit. After that I went back to Kawaii-san’s house to say thanks and good-bye.
Welcome to Day 1 Episode 1 of my 2020 Summer Vacation Road Trip around northern Japan. This summer I only got one week off for my break, so I decided to hit the road and drive north through Tohoku Japan. I packed up the car with my camping gear and hit the road. I don’t have a destination in sight, I just want to drive up the Japan Sea coastline and head north as far as possible. My goal is to make it to Aomori, but we’ll see. I’m going to stay off the highway and use only the local roads, cutting through small towns and villages along the way. Join me on this road trip adventure through northern Japan.
