中山隧道（なかやまずいどう） NAKAYAMA ZUIDOU 【字幕解説あり】4K撮影
中山隧道は新潟県長岡市山古志にある史跡で、住民が1933年から1949年まで、およそ16年の歳月をかけてツルハシだけで堀った、全長922mの日本最長の手掘りトンネルです。
四方を山に囲まれた小松倉地区の住民は、買い物や病院に行く時に1時間以上の時間をかけて中山峠を越えなければなりませんでした。
冬は4mにも及ぶ積雪と吹雪のため、通行は困難を極めました。
住民たちは話し合いの末、約100mに及ぶトンネル掘削工事をすることに決めました。
掘削の道具はツルハシのみ。
1933年11月12日からトンネル掘削工事が始まりました。
住民たちは交代でツルハシとノミを使って少しずつ掘り進めましたが、岩盤は固く、1日平均30センチ程度しか進めませんでした。
いつ終わるともしれない途方もない掘削作業。
住民たちは真っ暗なトンネルの中を、カンテラの光をたよりにひたすら堀り続けました。
途中、太平洋戦争のため4年間工事が中断されましたが、その後も諦めずに住民たちは工事を再開しました。
そしてついに、16年もの歳月を経て、1949年5月1日に広神村側に貫通したのです。
その時の住民たちの喜びは計り知れません。
中山隧道のトンネルが開通したことで、住民たちは冬でも中山峠を安全に通り抜けることができるようになり、生活環境が大幅に改善し、半世紀もの間住民たちの暮らしを支え続けました。
1998年に新しく国道291号の中山トンネルが開通したため、中山隧道は道路としての役割を終えましたが、現在は史跡として保存されています。
トンネルの中の岩肌にはツルハシの痕が残っており、途方も無い歳月を費やして人力で堀り抜いた先人たちの不屈の精神を感じることができます。
中山隧道は、山古志地域側の入口からのみ内部を見学することができます。（反対側の小出町側の入り口は崩落したため閉鎖されました）

The Nakayama Zuidou Tunnel is a historical site located in Yamakoshi, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, and is the longest hand-drilled tunnel in Japan with a total length of 922m, which was inhabited by the residents from 1933 to 1949 with a pickaxe for about 16 years.
The residents of the Komatsukura district, surrounded by mountains on all four sides, had to spend more than an hour crossing the Nakayama Pass when shopping or going to the hospital.
In winter, it was extremely difficult to pass due to the snow and snowstorm that reached 4 m.
After discussion, the residents decided to construct a tunnel excavation work for about 100 m.
The picking tool is only a pickaxe.
Tunnel excavation work began on November 12, 1933.
Residents took turns gradually digging with pickaxes and fleas, but the bedrock was solid and could only go about 30 cm a day on average.
A tremendous excavation work that will never end.
The inhabitants continued to dug the light of lantern in a pitch-dark tunnel.
Construction was interrupted for four years on the way due to the Pacific War, but after that the residents resumed construction without giving up.
Finally, after 16 years, on May 1, 1949, it penetrated the Hirokami Village side.
The joy of the residents at that time is immeasurable.
With the opening of the Nakayama Zuidou tunnel, the residents were able to safely pass through the Nakayama Pass even in winter, the living environment was greatly improved, and they continued to support their lives for half a century.
Since the new Nakayama Tunnel on National Route 291 opened in 1998, Nakayama Zuidou Tunnel has finished its role as a road, but it is now preserved as a historic site.
Marks of pickaxes are left on the rock surface in the tunnel, and you can feel the indomitable spirit of the ancestors who dug out manually with tremendous years.
The inside of the Nakayama Tunnel can only be visited from the entrance on the Yamakoshi area side. (The Koidemachi side entrance on the other side was closed because it collapsed)
