I visited Hiroshima with my dad four years ago. Touring all over Japan, Hiroshima’s peace park was definitely a highlight for us.

This year, Hiroshima marked the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing on the city by the United States on August 6, 1945. A uranium-core atomic bomb named “Little Boy” was dropped by a U.S. bomber exploded above Hiroshima 75 years ago, killing an estimated 140,000 people by the end of 1945. A second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on Aug. 9. Japan surrendered six days later, marking the end of World War II.

In the after math of the bombing it was said nothing would ever grow there in 75 years. Here we are in that imagined future. What grew in Hiroshima city is a dedication for peace around the war evidenced by the amazing Peace Park that was constructed a decade after the bombing. I am so grateful to able to visit the park with my father. Born in 1948, he was a child during the post-war era and felt a connection to our local tour guides who were the children of survivors. We were so fortunate to meet our guides Akemi and Yoko who gave us an in depth view on what occurred that day and the decades after that.

What was your takeaway? Will my dad’s dream come true?
