Hokkaido (北海道) is world-famous for its winters of heavy snow that makes it a reliable ski and snowboard destination, but it’s also a great summer destination, especially in July when the lavender fields of Furano (富良野市) are blooming and the hiking trails near Biei (美瑛町) are calling! Don’t forget to stop by beautiful Lake Toya (洞爺湖) for the nightly fireworks show. Besides all the natural beauty of Japan’s northernmost and least densely populated prefecture, Hokkaido has a lively capital city in Sapporo (札幌市) which you can happily eat and drink your way through for a couple days.
