Shirakawago : winter disney land of Japan
Shirakawa-go is a small but enchanting village with snow-capped mountains situated in the north-west of Gifu Prefecture
On our way to Shirakawago we also visited Takayama city. Here you can have a taste of traditional Japanese food, visit parks, shrines, have a sight of the frozen river,of course play in the snow.
We had fun roaming around the old streets of Takayama city that has the traditional japnese shpops from where you can purchase gifts to your family and friends back home.
how to reach Shirakawago:
From Tokyo: 2-hour train to Nagoya Station in Shinkansen, and 2-hour train from Nagoya to Takayama and then50 minutes from Takayama by bus (Nohi Bus Center).
The journey from Takayama to shirakawago is amazing with lot of snow covered mountains, valleys, tunnels.
You can also book from a travel attraction operator, most of them have English translators.
one operator from whom we booked our tour:
Shirakawago was listed as an UNISCO site in 1995 as a result of the locals’ commitment towards preserving many unique elements of the village’s history despite the harsh climate. There are houses here which are around 300 years old, canals, rice fields, small farms.
During winter there are limited weekends of illumination of traditional huts which is a beautiful sight. You can take enchanted Disney movie-like photos with white powdered roof tops of the huts.
Area becomes crowded with tourists during winter, so an overnight stay is recommended. If you plan on staying overnight, you will find a number of the farmhouses being utilised as restaurants and minshukus (Japanese style bed and breakfast).
