Trivia: There is Meriken Park and there is Meriken Road. Do you know what “Meriken” means? Kobe is a port town and it was one of the biggest gateways from foreign countries. After the war, many American people and stuff started coming in through the Kobe port. Back then not many Japanese understood English, so when they heard the word “American” it sounded like “Meriken” to them. So “Meriken Park” and “Meriken Road” were supposed to be “American Park” and “American Road”. It’s funny we still use the word when we call “flour”. We call it “Meriken-ko” and “ko” means powder. However these days not many people know the origin of “Meriken” any more.
