There is no better mountain for beginners than Mt. Tarumae, located just an hour from Sapporo. Mt. Tarumae is an active volcano that last erupted in 1909 forming an impressive, steaming, mordor-like lava dome that sits as the volcano’s crown jewel. The 45 minute trail to the treeless crater rim begins at the mid-mountain level parking lot, with further options for circumnavigating the lava dome or a side-trail to Mt. Fuppushi to extend the hike to a half or full day adventure. Lake & sea views, unique flora and uncrowded hiking trails make this one of Hokkaido’s best day hikes.
