Hokkaido with its cold climate and vast farming land is the primary dairy producer for Japan. Half of Japan’s milk is produced in Hokkaido. Sixty percent of the dairy produced is used for drinking milk with the remainder being processed into other dairy products such as butter, cheese, yogurt, and so on.
Hokkaido dairy products have a strong brand value in Japan. Many products produced in Hokkaido heavily advertise their ties to Hokkaido to assure consumers of the fresh taste and high quality this region boasts.
Hokkaido is proud of its dairy. In addition to the various Hokkaido yogurt and ice cream produced, visitors will notice dairy being used in various dishes. For example, Sapporo ramen is served with a slice of butter on the top. Butter cookie sandwiches is a popular souvenir. Consisting of two cookies with butter and raisins in the middle, this souvenir is one of many examples of Hokkaido’s love for its dairy.
