Japan Trip: Daisetsu Kogen Onsen Hiking trail through a pond Hokkaido10

Daisetsuzan (大雪山) is Hokkaido’s largest national park. It is a paradise for outdoor lovers, hikers, brown bears and deer. It is the first place in Japan to see autumn colors and snow each year.

Daisetsu Kogen Onsen (大雪高原温泉) is one of bases from where Daisetsuzan National Park can be explored. It is located at 1260 meters above sea level. It is the small, remote base on the eastern side of the national park, having just a single accommodation with hot spring baths and is connected to the main road by a ten kilometer, unpaved road. However it is very popular with people who want to enjoy autumn color in every season.

Daisetsu Kogen Onsen is the trailhead of a popular, circular hiking trail through a pond dotted highland that offers some of the most impressive autumn colors in all of Japan. Because the area is densely populated by brown bears, hikers need to attend a short lecture at the bear information center before starting out. Walking the entire trail takes around five hours and requires no advanced equipment ore hiking skills.

From Daisetsu Kogen Onsen , a separate hiking trail leads to Mount Midoridake (3 hours one way), from where well prepared hikers can continue hiking into the enormous interior of the Daisetsuzan mountains.

Due to the long winters, the accommodation at Daisetsu Kogen Onsen is open for only about a third of the year from mid June to mid October. It offers 16 simple tatami guest rooms that get fully booked far in advance during the autumn color season. Rates start at around 11,000 yen per night and person, which includes dinner and breakfast. The accommodation’s hot spring bath can be used by non-staying guests between 10:30 and 17:00 with a cost of 700 yen.
