In this video we take a look at the ins and outs of Japan’s contentious Go To Travel campaign, which as the time publishing was scheduled to launch July 22, 2020.

Tentatively we’re going to say that Japan’s Go To Travel campaign is just about ready to go, or launch, on July 22, 2020. Well, at least that’s the situation as we type these words, according to the people behind it. By the time we’ve added a final full stop the status of the contentious campaign could well have changed.

It was on July 10 that the campaign was announced as starting, with all its discount bells and whistles, on July 22 ahead of a stretch of days off originally put in place so as we could all kick back and gawp at the start of the 2020 Summer Games.

In the days that followed plenty of people rolled their eyes in disbelief at the decision to send people off on their travels across Japan, on accounts of a resurgence in the numbers of new coronavirus infections, especially in Tokyo.

A decision was made then, to cut Tokyo out of the Go To Travel campaign for the time being and start as planned on the 22nd. Since then large groups of the elderly and the very young have since be excluded from the campaign.

By the time you’ve read this and watched the video, the situation could have change. You’ve got to stay on your toes.
