Dual-purpose video – showing off a gorgeous volcanic hike at Akita Komagatake and reviewing the new hiking boots I just bought: the Mont-bell Alpine Cruiser 2000 Wide. Akita Komagatake consists of a number of summits. One of them, Medake, is still smoking and last erupted in 1970-71.

I pronounced a few things incorrectly in the video, please forgive. I said himezakura when I should have said hinazakura (corrected with a subtitle). There are some other Japanese minor mispronunciations that I hope you won’t notice. I’ll be more careful in the future.

Sugita-san is a licensed Mountain Guide that works at the Hachimantai Mountain Hotel in Hachimantai, Iwate. ( I’ve bumped into him randomly on the rails quite a bit recently, though I first met him through work. He is an all-around great guy and available to lead hikes in the vicinity. (He doesn’t speak English, but I may be hired on as an interpreter for him in some cases….)

The Trailhead is at Kunimi Hot Springs (which has a mixed bath for men and women as well as a bath that pets are welcome to use).

The bus stop where you can get to the 8th Station by bus is here:
I neglected to mention that there is also a hot springs bath here!
