Japan has four distinct seasons: March to May is spring; June to August is summer; September to November is autumn; and
December to February is winter. Each season has very different temperatures and climates.
So if you’re looking to travel to Japan on a budget, winter is a great time to visit this notoriously expensive destination.
One exception to this rule is around New Years, which is a popular time for Japanese people to take off and travel around the country/.
Cold weather and warm spirits
As winter approaches, a frigid chill engulfs the whole of Japan, and while it rarely snows in most of the country’s metropolitan areas,
the surrounding mountains and northern regions are regularly covered by fresh blankets of powder.
Pack plenty of warm clothes, then bundle up and head outside to enjoy snow festivals, skiing, and snowboarding, and relaxing onsen resorts.
Winter festivals
Cold weather brings people closer together. Despite the cold air, many traditional festivals and events take place in the winter,
transforming the harsh winter days and dark winter nights into a fun and warm celebration.Arguably Japan’s most popular winter event,
the Sapporo Snow Festival welcomes upwards of two million people, showcasing hundreds of sculptures made of ice and snow.
The festival is held in the first week of February, with the elaborate pieces displayed in Odori Park , Susukino and Tsudome.

One of Tohoku’s 5 Great Snow Festivals, the Iwate Snow Festival is held at Koiwai Farm in early February.
There are many snow sculptures, large and small. You can also have fun sledding down a large snow slide, riding a horse sleigh, or riding a snow train.
There are many food and drink stands as well; Koiwai’s meat product booths are especially popular.
If you get too cold, you can warm your body with various soups or amazake, a sweet drink made from fermented rice.
