Some exploration highlights of the first half of 2020. I didn’t get out of Fukuoka much due to co**na. I will hopefully get to Saga and Oita a few times before the end of the year.

13 Butsu, February 5
A supposedly haunted cave in the country-side of Yame, Fukuoka. Dan from Come2Japan joined me. At the front of the cave were the famous headless Buddha statues. We we surprised at how deep the cave was.

Hazegatouge Tunnel, March 16
Hazegatouge tunnel is one of Kitakyushu’s many ghost spots. Dan and I visited this tunnel on the small mountain road at night. It was a fun experience!

WWII Aircraft Hangar, May 23
Short but interesting trip. This hangar was built into a hill to avoid detection from above. Worth your time if you’re in the area.

Takakura Fort
My second time here, but a better look this time around. Built at the end of the 19th century. Lots of rooms to explore. A little hard to access, but worth the effort to get to.

Natsuyoshi Ancient Tombs
2 of many in the area, these ancient Japanese tombs, or Kofun, are thought to be from around the end of the 6th century. It’s not often they are left open like this so I jumped at the chance to take a look inside.
