If you visit Okinawa Prefecture, a great souvenir to pick up are π΄π©πͺπ΄π’, sometimes referred to as guardian lions. They look a bit like a combination between a lion and a dog in some depictions, and you’ll notice each pair has one shisa with an open mouth, and one with a closed mouth. The closed mouth shisa is said to keep the good spirits in, and the open mouthed shisa wards off the bad ones. π
