Japan Travel: Beauty to Protect Biei, the Blue Pond, Hokkaido 06
The Blue Pond (青い池)located outside the hot spring (onsen) town of Shirogane Onsen, in Biei, Hokkaido. The deep blue color the lake holds is due to the natural minerals which have been dissolved in the water. The pond was not a tourist attraction until Apple Inc., made a picture of the pond a wallpaper option.
The pond is an artificial lake created to prevent damage to Biei in the event Mount Tokachidake erupts. After the eruption on December 1988, the pond was constructed by the Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau.
