Kids in Japan love May 5. Not only is it Children’s Day, but for this holiday we put up “carp streamers”, called koinobori in Japanese. Hanging from poles above houses, these colorful windsocks are drawn to resemble wild carp. The way the streamers blow in the wind mimics the courage and strength of a carp swimming upstream.
