Located in central / Southern Okinawa, sits Nakagusku castle ruins. These ruins from the 15th century are from the Ryukyu Kingdom and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site to help preserve this part of former Japan.
This former castle was ruled by Gosamaru, a king who commanded much of the island – most notably to the north.
Gosamaru eventually lost control of his castles to Amawai, who ran Katsuren castle.
This site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 alongside several other locations across the island.
