The Bukeyashiki (Samurai residential street) of Kakunodate is not only beautiful when covered in the bright pinks of cherry blossoms in the spring or magnificent fall colors, but also conceals a powerful simplicity come wintertime. When snow falls onto the dark wooden structures of the Bukeyashiki, the contrast can be amazing. As the snow silences the area, it’s easy to imagine a samurai from hundreds of years ago walking down the street. Head indoors and get some warmth from some of Akita’s specialties – Inaniwa Udon noodles or Kiritanpo hot pot. There’s nothing like a wonderful warm meal after coming in from the cold!
