The Home of a Diplomat is one of the Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The American-Victorian style foreign residence sitting in the Yamate Italian Garden housed the diplomat of the Meiji Government, who served as the New York consul general. The rooms such as the dining room, the reception room, the study, and the bed rooms show the living style of the Meiji period. *There is a resting space overlooking the view of the Yamate Italian Garden.
1910年に明治政府の外交官・内田定槌氏の邸宅として、アメリカ人建築家J.M.ガーディナーの設計により東京都渋谷区南平台に建てられました。
建物は木造2階建てで塔屋がつき、天然スレート葺きの屋根、下見板張りの外壁で、華やかな装飾が特徴のアメリカン・ヴィクトリアンの影響を色濃く残しています。
平成9(1997)年に横浜市は、内田定槌氏の孫にあたる宮入氏からこの館の寄贈を受け、山手イタリア山庭園に移築復原し、一般公開、国の重要文化財に指定されました。
室内は家具や調度類が再現され、当時の外交官の暮らしを体験できるようになっています。今なお残るガスストーブやステンドグラス、サイドボード等の家具類が歴史を感じさせます。また、付属棟には、喫茶スペースが設けられています。
