武漢東湖磨山櫻園位於梅園近旁的磨山南麓，佔地260畝，有櫻花樹10000株。園內種植的第一批櫻花由日本前首相田中角榮贈送給鄧穎超，再由鄧穎超轉贈東湖。絕大部分櫻花是中日雙方1998年共同投資栽種的。武漢東湖磨山櫻園與日本青森縣的弘前櫻花園，美國的華盛頓州櫻花園並稱為世界三大櫻花之都。
2013年櫻花節期間雨水較多，遊客紛紛向景區諮詢櫻花的情況，東湖櫻花園內中晚花開放，賞櫻期將持續至4月初。特別是園中湖邊溪旁盛開的300餘棵垂枝櫻花，深受遊客喜愛，被讚為“瀑布櫻”，與櫻花園中
的溪水和湖水一起成為一道靚麗的風景。
據了解，東湖櫻花園是全國垂枝櫻花數量最多、最集中的地方，雨晴垂枝、八重紅垂枝等品種都是櫻花中的珍品。詩人王心鑑觀賞後在詩中這樣寫到“淺溪水清冷，陌上正蔥蘢。粉霞勝雲錦，落英若平絨。芳蕤釵頭鳳，清婉玉嬌龍。憶昔南來燕，銜去染東瀛。”
走進武漢東湖磨山櫻花園，依著青青的山坡，幾千株櫻花爛漫的盛開著，雪白一片。微風吹來，花枝搖曳，落英繽紛。木塔水影，波泛幽香，徐徐春風中，讓人流連忘返。據了解，始建於1978年的磨山櫻花園，現有染井吉野、關山、大島櫻、垂枝櫻等30餘個品種。全園採用日式庭院設計，頗具日本特色。櫻花園裡，有一個叫七十八櫻花亭的亭，有櫻花78株，是為紀念1978年中日友好條約的簽訂。
另外,3月12日~4月2日，武漢櫻花節也將在東湖磨山櫻花園開幕。此次最大的看點是夜間賞櫻。磨山管理投資50多萬元，在櫻花樹下配置了各種鹵素燈（一種射燈）、水下彩燈，烘托出滿樹的花影，讓遊客感受花前月下的浪漫情懷。
