Hi guys! In this video, I’ll give you a glimpse into the history of Okinawa, as it was once a sovereign state known as the Ryukyu Kingdom.

The Kingdom has previously been linked to both Japan, and China’s Ming Dynasty. In fact, at one point it was subservient to both at the same time! After being formally annexed by Japan in the 19th century, the Monarchy is no longer in power, but their palace, Shuri Castle, still stands today despite repeated destruction and reconstruction. It had since served as one of Okinawa’s prime tourist attractions, a symbol of their history, and a prestigious venue fit for a banquet hosting the G8 leaders in the year 2000!

Tragically, on 31st October 2019 – Shuri Castle was completely destroyed once again by an electrical fire. I really hope it can be rebuilt in the near future, because this was the 5th(!) time it had been destroyed, previously in 1453, 1660, 1709 and 1945. If not, then I hope this video serves as a fitting tribute to its memory. Further reading here. –
