The Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel is the world’s largest underground river which puts to use Japan’s cutting-edge engineering technology.

The main objective of this facility is to reduce the damage caused by regular flooding by diverting river overflow via a tunnel to this facility and channelling it into the Edogawa River. This is exactly what happened on Saturday, October 12th, 2019 when Typhoon Hagibis battered the Greater Tokyo Area. Not everyone was able to escape the wrath of the typhoon, however had this facility not exist, the damage may have turned out far worse.
