As a City of Music, this famous museum of musical instruments in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture prides it international museum with more or less 1,200 musical instruments. It was founded in 1995 and it has been awarded the Fumio Koizumi Prize for Ethnomusicology in 2014.

The Hamamatsu Museum of Musical Instruments is the first municipal museum of musical instruments in Japan. It was established as part of the Hamamatsu City “Creating a City of Music” project beginning in 1981, and is registered museum facility under the law of museums.

The mission of the museum is to collect and preserve a representative selection of musical instruments and related materials from around the world, to research them, to exhibit them with an equal and unbiased perspective and to cultivate vast knowledge and understanding of music, musical instruments, and culture through a variety of activities.

Commemorating the 20th anniversary of this “living museum”, it has been awarded the Fumio Koizumi Prize for Ethnomusicology in 2014. Having had many opportunities to present its activities at a number of international conferences, this museum is now highly regarded as one of the best musical instruments museums in the world.

It hopes to be a center for all musical instruments and their culture, and be a place where people will meet together to discover this wonderful world through music.
