A cinematic video of the yearly fire festival here in Nozawa Onsen, filmed on location with a GoPro Hero 8 and a Panasonic Lumix G85.

Each year on January the 15th, all the 42 and 25 year old men of the village of Nozawa Onsen take on special roles. A large wooden tower is erected as gesture towards the health and growth of newly born children. That evening, the local villagers try to attack the tower with burning sticks. The 25 year olds have the unenviable task of trying to defend the base of the tower and the 42 year olds protect the top. Eventually as the tower gradually succumbs to the flames, the festival concludes with a huge bonfire. The radiating power and energy of the festival is almost as intoxicating as the large quantities of sake imbibed that same night…
