Okinawa is not only famous for their Okinawa Soba, but also for their absolutely delicious pork. This naturally makes it a good place for tonkotsu ramen, which uses pork bones for the broth. We got a tip from a local and went to one of the best Okinawa Tonkotsu places in the North of Okinawa.
The famous pork breed of Okinawa is called “Agu Buta” (アグー豚), a breed of black pigs that is naturally home on Okinawa. It was allegedly imported from China around 600 years ago and is famous for it’s tender and rich tasting meat.
We went to Onizo Ramen, which was recommended to us from a local for using Agu Buta bones for their tonkotsu ramen. And I can tell you know, it really paid off to follow this guy’s recommendation!
We had two different bowls for this video:
Goku Oni Ramen:
Their signature dish “Oni Ramen” which is enriched by seabura, suspended pork back fat. A creamy and rich experience, chock full of flavor. Due to the Agu Buta, it definitely has a different flavor compared to “standard” tonkotsu ramen.
W Soup Ramen:
This bowl has tonkotsu broth mixed with torigara broth. Torigara is essentially made like tonkotsu, but instead of using pork bones, chicken bones are used. The mix of both creates a more clear, almost consomme looking soup. Flavored with a rich tare, this is bowl as an absolute umami bomb.
Both bowls did really well with some additional garlic, but even without they have enough flavor to make you long for more.
The noodles were not as thin as typical Hakata style hosomen, but definitely close to them.
For 650 Yen, I don’t think I have had a bowl with a better value in my years in Japan yet!
Apart from their normal ramen, they also offer a ramen challenge. Their challenge is a 1.5 times bigger version of their spicy tonkotsu ramen that is 20 (!!!) times spicier than their regular spicy tonkotsu. If you manage to finish the whole bowl in under 15 minutes, you just ate for free! If not, you will have to dish out 1.000 Yen. Definitely an idea for all the hungry spicy food lovers out there!
