Nakijin-jo | Nakijin Castle Ruins | UNESCO World Heritage Site | Okinawa | Japan

Our first full day in Okinawa saw us make out way to the very top of the island. We decided to start with a bit of history by visiting the Nakijin-jo.

Nakijin-jo are the remains of an ancient castle that flourished during the 14th and 15 centuries. At the time, the island of Okinawa was not part of mainland Japan, and was ruled by smaller kings. Eventually these individual kingdoms would collectively form the Ryukyu, but at this time in history they were separate.

Nakijin was the castle for the the northern kingdom of the island. Although there are no buildings remaining, you can still see many of the walls and the locations of buildings which existed on this site.

Located on the site as well, is a cultural center where you can learn a bit more about the history of this place and see artifacts from the area.

Alo Japan.
